County route numbers are not posted in the standard fashion in Erie County. However, some roads are marked with unique signs (shown above). Although there is no apparent overall pattern, routes 250-511 form a series that runs generally from northeast to southwest, advancing through the County along a loosely alternating latitudinal path.

The Erie County highway system is one of the most extensive in the state, owing to the high level of urbanization, as well as the large size, of the County. To a greater or lesser degree, the majority of primary and local through roads are county-maintained, the Towns being responsible for residential roads and streets. Numbers usually correspond to a single road name, not necessarily a continuous segment of roadway, excepting that some roads change names across Village boundaries. Additionally, longer eponymous road segments may carry more than one number.

In several cases, sources differ on exact road names. Major discrepancies of this type are shown in [brackets]. Differences in suffixes (Road, Street etc.) are not generally noted.

Italicized routes are obsolete designations. In the "Towns" column, Villages and CITIES are also listed. No county roads enter the Cattaraugus or Tonawanda Indian Reservations.
